A BREC facility, Baton Rouge Gallery's ("BRG"), Movies & Music on the Lawn has been a constant staple of summer arts entertainment in Baton Rouge since its beginnings in the late 1980s. With "Slapstickers," the program focuses on the fun and timeless appeal of silent-era slapstick comedy, partnered with the Baton Rouge area's best contemporary musicians who put their own spin on the film's score live.
Admission is free for BRG members and just $5 for non-members. Free popcorn is included in the price of admission. The screening begins at 8 pm (or sunset, whichever comes last).
What sets Movies & Music on the Lawn apart from most other film series is the pairing of silent films with contemporary musicians who are tasked with performing the film's score live. These musicians typically perform both prepared and improvised material that gives the film a completely new context and can only be heard during the Movies & Music on the Lawn screening.
BRG's Movies & Music on the Lawn series is held on the last Saturday of each month, May through October. On September 24, the series will feature "Big Business," "Liberty" and "Battle of the Century" - a trio of shorts starring Laurel & Hardy (sponsored by Films in Motion). The series will close on October 29 with a screening of Mel Brooks' 1976 film, "Silent Movie" (sponsored by Whole Foods), marking the first time in the program’s history that a post-1950 film receives the Movies & Music on the Lawn treatment.
